Living Advent – Focused

December 20, 2018

I am still working hard to live the Advent season at home, every day.  Have a look at one of the things I’ve been up to recently on my blog: It seems as if it was just yesterday that the season of Advent was beginning, and yet here were are, almost at its end.  It would be easy for me to relax now and get caught up in all the excitement of last minute preparations – Christmas is so close, isn’t it?  And I’ve been blessed to have already attended a couple of Christmas gatherings with friends or family.  It’s often at this time of year that I get to spend extended time chatting and doing quizzes with those who are important to me.  But, I have also been aware of moments of creeping panic. There has been panic about presents, (what do you buy for an Uncle who doesn’t need anything?), about cards (I missed the second class post deadline, yet again!) and about food (what if nobody likes my cooking, will it ruin their day?)  I know in my head that these things a

10th Feb-27th March 2016 Pathways to God Wednesday 17th February 2016 Wednesday February 17th Lent 2016 This year during Lent we are encouraging everyone to use the season to explore different ways of encountering the living God in Jesus Christ. Our services, sermon themes, and study courses have all been designed to help us do this and you are welcome to join in as much as you can. This is the first of our Pathways to God lent sessions. Each week there will be refresh-ments from 7pm. We then begin with worship and prayer together before going off to our different groups. Please make sure you attend the course you have signed up for! If after the first week you feel you want to change courses you can join a different one next week. But this is only possible this week. We hope you will stay with the group you have decided to join. By sticking with a course you will get more out of it and others will be able to learn from you. Thank you. Opening Worship Together we say our prayer for Len

40 days of Prayer Please join us in 40 days of prayer this Lent. Loving Father, bless the community of St. Martin’s with your love, compassion and care. Fill us with your Spirit that we might walk in your ways. Open our eyes to see your hand at work in our lives and glorify your name through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Upcoming special events for Lent: Ash Wednesday – 5th March We will mark the start of Lent with services at 12 noon and 6pm on Ash Wednesday. Both services will include the opportunity to receive the imposition of ashes as a mark of this season of penitence. The 6pm service will be Holy Communion. All welcome. Lent Course Last week 27 Anglican bishops wrote an open letter to the government to protest about people going hungry in the UK. This is part of the End Hunger Fast campaign (see www.endhungerfast.co.uk). The Lent course is called Parables & Possessions and looks at issues of poverty and our relationship with money. It will be on Wednesday evenings from

Launch of the New Vision Document

October 25, 2013

After careful, prayerful discussion and consultation, listening to what God is call us as a church to do, we have recently launched our new Vision Document. There are many challenges here but with the power of God through the Holy Spirit, a willingness on our part to serve and give sacrificially we can and will see God in his grace and mercy do amazing things through the life of St Martin’s. Three clear priorities have emerged out of the comprehensive consultation and discernment process that we followed between May and July 2013. They are: Welcome Pastoral Care Discipleship (Learning to be a follower of Jesus) For further details of what we mean by these terms and how we will work on them over the next three years are laid out in the document that you can download by visiting Our Vision Page. Please do read through this document prayerfully and carefully asking God to show you how you can help to see this vision become a reality in your life, the life of St Martin’s and the life of th

Biopolar & Faith, My Story

May 08, 2013

When I read Rohan’s blog post this morning it bought me to tears! Its an incredible and honest story. It gives insight into biopolar disorder and into faith: into the difficulties of living with mental ill-health and into the amazing impact that God can have on people’s lives. The bible is really brought to life when you see how God was speaking directly into Rohan’s life when the bible was first written all those years ago! Rohan’s story will continue as he looks to God for continued guidence, but many of us know sadly that some people’s stories end too soon and too tradgically. Let this story help you to understand the lives of those who live with mental ill-health (which may be you or those close to you), and let it help you to search for God’s heart.  Be encourged by the word of God and let Him speak into your own life, your own actions, and your own health. Please feel free to use the (moderated) comments section at the bottom of this story.
